What is dye migration / re-sublimation?
Heat transferring vinyls onto polyester or polyamide fabrics can result in “migration”. The heat of the press can re-activate the dye in the fabric and migrate into the heat-transferred graphic (changing its colour). This migration, or re-sublimation, phenomenon can take 48 to 72 hours to happen, sometimes even 2 to 3 weeks. Below is a guide to fabrics and which product to use with each:
1. Migration only occurs with polyester or polyamide so there is no migration risk with other fabrics.
2.  If you transfer onto sublimated polyester fabrics (the back of the fabrics is white or lighter shade of color) then a low temperature SEF vinyl like Tattoo Nylon can prevent migration but always test prior to production.
3. If you transfer onto dispersed dyed polyester fabrics (same color back and front of the fabric) then the use of SEF Tattoo SBB Optima is mandatory.
4. “Soft shell” garments made out of dispersed dyed micro fibers are the worst “migration” case scenario and testing is recommended before production even when using Tattoo SBB Optima vinyl.
